The disproportionate impact of pressing health conditions is well documented for minorities within the broader population, especially with illnesses such as stroke, kidney disease, and prostate cancer. There is also a growing incidence of pregnancy-related deaths for African American women that are preventable. What is alarming, however, is that so many within the small immediate and extended family of the 400 Years of African American History Commission are affected. The Minority Majority is a 4-part series presented by the 400 Years of African American History Commission that looks at these health issues and what should be done to address these disparities. The program Premieres on Sunday, April 28 at 7:00 pm EST on the Commission’s streaming TV channel at smogotelevision.com and on their website, www.400yaahc.gov. Part 2, Maternal Health, will premiere on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12

At the end of Phase II of I Fear For My Life, HBCU students who participated in this phase and who are members of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ) student chapters, attended the 50th Anniversary Conference of the NABCJ in Birmingham, AL. While in Alabama, they, along with NAFJ Pen or Pencil participants and 400 Years of African American History Commissioners visited historic sites in that state, including making a trek across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This special includes highlights from that program as well as interviews with women who were children Foot Soldiers during the Civil Rights movement and who crossed the Edmund Pettus bridge in a march that came to be known as Bloody Sunday.

The 400 Years of African American History Commission ("the commission") is a government agency that develops and facilitates activities throughout the U.S. to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in the English Colonies at Point Comfort, VA in 1619, recognizing and highlighting the resilience and contributions of African Americans from that seminal moment forward, while simultaneously acknowledging the painful impact of slavery, racial discrimination and racism on our nation.
